Sunset Music Festival expanding to two days in 2014

One trend we're noticing: In 2014, local music festivals are going super-sized.

In just its second year, the Gasparilla Music Festival (March 8-9) is expanding from one day to two. So is the second annual WhigFest (Feb. 15-16).

And so, we're learning, is the Sunset Music Festival, which last year drew 22,000 electronic music fans to Raymond James Stadium to see David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Krewella, Knife Party and more. On the heels of that event's overwhelming success, they're expanding to two days, May 24 and 25. That's two days and more than 20 hours of EDM madness. Might as well make the most of your three-day Memorial Day weekend, right?

A lineup announcement is probably a long way off -- last year's lineup wasn't unveiled until late March -- but tickets will go on sale anyway at 10 a.m. Friday via SMFtampa.com.

Organizers Sunset Events and Disco Donnie Presents must feel like they're onto something here. In addition to SMF, they've hosted the Club Cirque Festival and a Deadmau5 concert at RayJay in the past few months. Both were big successes, so one wonders what they've got up their sleeves for SMF '14. Avicii? Skrillex? Armin Van Buuren? Calvin Harris? We shall see...
