Sunshine Music Festival lineup: Tedeschi Trucks Band, Bruce Hornsby, Mavis Staples, more coming to Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg

With festivals dropping like flies these days -- Big Guava, Tropical Heatwave, Chillin' Music Fest -- it's nice to see one not only sticking it out in Tampa Bay, but thriving in Year 5.

The Sunshine Music Festival is returning to St. Petersburg's Vinoy Park on Jan. 14, and joining headliners and co-founders Tedeschi Trucks Band on this year's lineup are a few choice rock, soul and jam-band heroes: Bruce Hornsby, Mavis Staples, Dave Mason and Joe Russo's Almost Dead, a jam-band supergroup featuring members of Further, Ween and other projects. Rounding out the bill are Railroad Earth, North Mississippi Allstars and the Greyhounds.

The concert typically brings thousands of people to downtown St. Petersburg in mid-January, making it one of Live Nation's most successful festival projects in Tampa Bay.

Susan Tedeschi, who co-organizes the festival with husband (and fellow guitar legend) Derek Trucks, told the Times in 2015 that the goal was "to have a lot of great musicians that can play together, or just to show people some of the talent that we like. I think if they like us, they're going to like a lot of the bands that we invited to come out and play."

And who wouldn't want to see a jam session between Tedeschi Trucks, Hornsby and Staples? Let's hope someone makes that happen.

Tickets are $56.45 and up, and they go on sale Sept. 26, though limited early bird tickets, available Friday, start at just $45. Click here and here for details.
