'The Rainbow Kid' 'The Open' lead Sunscreen Film Festival winners list

Best supporting actor Julian Richings and Dylan Harman in the Sunscreen Film Festival award winner, The Rainbow Kid.

Kire Paputt's uplifting road trip movie The Rainbow Kid was named best feature Sunday when the 11th annual Sunscreen Film Festival awards were presented.

The Rainbow Kid stars Dylan Harman, a teenage actor with Down syndrome, as a boy obsessed with rainbows, who seeks to locate a legendary pot of gold at the end of one, to save his family's home. Co-star Julian Richings was voted best supporting actor, playing a burned out punk rocker the boy encounters along the way.

Leading all Sunscreen features with three prizes is Marc Lahore's The Open, a post-apocalypse fantasy in which survivors keep spirits high by playing imaginary tennis. Lahore was named best director while Pierre Benoist and Maia Lavesseur-Costil won the best actor and actress prizes.

Alex McKenna of the romantic farce Bear With Us was named best supporting actress.

Among the festival's Latin cinema entrants, top honors went to the opening night selection Spare Parts, starring George Lopez as a high school robotics teacher, and the documentary The Resurrection of Victor Jara. Other winners were Oasis (best Latin short) and Bienvenidos (best inspirational Latin film).

Breathe was named best U.S. short, while Raisa fvrom Moldova snagged the international honor.

Best documentary feature voters picked Broke, and Care for a Cure won the documentary short prize.

Other Sunscreen winners include Amerigo (best Florida film) and Moom (best animated film).
