The top 10 Tampa music stories of 2013, No. 8: Hip-hop headliners' up-and-down year

On one hand, it was an amazing year for hip-hop in Tampa Bay. Drake! Kanye West! Macklemore and Ryan Lewis! J. Cole! Pitbull! Rick Ross! Lil Wayne! T.I.! Wiz Khalifa! Big Boi! LL Cool J! Ghostface Killah! The list goes on — Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, French Montana, Joey Bada$$, Trinidad James, Naughty By Nature, Mac Miller...

So it’s worth asking: What happened to the local hip-hop festival game?

In 2013, there was no Wild 94.1 Last Damn Show. An event that could have presumably replaced it, 95.7 The Beat’s Birthday Bash — with Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz — was canceled about a week before the show. No reason was given for the fizzling of Last Damn Show; as for the Birthday Bash, we think Lamar’s move to tour with Kanye West had something to do with that.

Maybe we’ll just have to wait for next spring, with Wild Splash and Funk Fest.
