The top 10 Tampa music stories of 2013, No. 9: Taylor, Selena, Rihanna and more pop divas storm the Forum
(Through the end of the year on Soundcheck, we’re counting down some of the top local music stories of 2013.)
Every year a slew of big-name acts come through Tampa Bay. But this year in particular, didn't it seem like nary a month went by when there wasn't at least one major-league, A-list pop diva at the Tampa Bay Times Forum?
It started at last year's 93.3-FLZ Jingle Ball, when Ke$ha and her boatload of booty-shaking dancers were among the main draws. February's hottest ticket was Pink and her aerial acrobatics, while March brought Alicia Keys' soaring voice. April saw Taylor Swift and Rihanna headline on back-to-back nights, while one of rock 'n' roll's original leading ladies, Stevie Nicks, played with Fleetwood Mac in June. October brought popera singer Sarah Brightman and then Selena Gomez on Halloween eve, and just last week, it was Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande who rocked the 93.3-FLZ Jingle Ball.
Lest you think we're being too loose and sexist with the term "diva," it's worth noting that the solo males who played the Forum this year engaged in far more egregiously divalicious behavior than the women. Justin Bieber showed up late for his concet in August, while Kanye West and Bruno Mars wouldn't allow cameas into the building for their sets. But at least they showed up, which is more than we can say for Katt Williams, who bailed on his February gig at the extreme last minute -- fans were already in their seats -- with no advance notice.
Too bad Lady Gaga had to cancel her show there in March, or we would have had a complete set. Hey, there's always next year.
