Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers coming to Amalie Arena in Tampa
Has it really been 40 years since Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers formed in Gainesville? Are we really four decades into the greatest rock career any Floridian has forged?
Seems that way, because Petty and the Heartbreakers are about to embark on a 40th anniversary tour in 2017, and it's going to stop in Tampa.
The legendary rockers will play Tampa's Amalie Arena on May 6, according to his website. The Eagles' Joe Walsh will open the show. Tickets start at $31.75 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Dec. 16. Pair a couple with the Heartbreakers' new career-spanning box set, and that's one heck of a Christmas gift.
That's especially true because it's not clear how much longer the Heartbreakers will be around.
"I'm thinking it may be the last trip around the country," Petty told Rolling Stone. "It's very likely we'll keep playing, but will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don't think so. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was thinking this might be the last big one. We're all on the backside of our sixties. I have a granddaughter now I'd like to see as much as I can. I don't want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that's a lot of time."
On the other hand, guitarist Mike Campbell told Rolling Stone: "I've been hearing him say that of the past 10 years. It would be a shame to stop playing while we're at the peak of our abilities."
Either way, this is a can't-miss show for 2017. Click here for details on the show.
