Weezy Week retro-review: Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Keri Hilson and more at Tampa's 1-800-Ask-Gary Amphitheatre in 2011
(All week, Soundcheck is paying tribute to the unusual life and career of Lil Wayne in a series of features we’re calling Weezy Week.)
Lil Wayne's last trip to Tampa was in 2011, when he brought Rick Ross, Keri Hilson, Far East Movement, Lloyd and Ace Hood, among others, to what was then called the 1-800-Ask-Gary Amphitheatre. About 12,500 fans turned out to gree them.
Sean Daly was among them, and he wrote:
He's cuddly! Adorable even! He's also a heck of a showman, making sure people got bang for bucks. ... He's an original, a transcender of genre for whom rhyming is a full-body pursuit. He first appeared onstage wearing one red shoe, one blue shoe, rocketing out the fury of I'm Goin' In and Bill Gates. He's a self-made millionaire who sees opportunity on one side, violence on the other — but has a Bugs Bunny cartoon rolling in the cinema of his brain at all times.
