Weezy Week retro-review: Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj and more crush Orlando's Amway Center in 2011
(All week, Soundcheck is paying tribute to the unusual life and career of Lil Wayne in a series of features we’re calling Weezy Week.)
Your humble Soundcheck editor saw Lil Wayne live for the first time in 2011, during one of his typically star-studded festival-type tours. This one's lineup was particularly staggering: Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Travis Barker and Mix Master Mike, Gunplay, Meek Mill, DJ Khaled, Yelawolf, the Cool Kids, Porcelain Black, Lil Twist, Shanell, Mack Maine and Birdman.
Yeah. It was a spectacle.
The four-hour show featured a set of some 30 hits from Weezy alone including playful takes on Sky's The Limit and Got Money and dynamite show-stoppers A Milli and 6 Foot 7 Foot. He spent the set scampering through a multi-tiered set like a spry little elf, with fireworks and a backing band adding arena-rock theatrics.
