Welcome to tbt*'s 2014 Ultimate Local Music Guide!
Here’s a secret about Record Store Day: People think it’s all about the vinyl. I’m here to argue that it’s not.
Though RSD’s official release list grows larger and more mystifying every year — this year’s trove includes exclusive and pricey rarities by not-so-indie artists like Bruce Springsteen and One Direction — it’s really the experience of the day that makes it worth celebrating. Even in a festival-saturated culture like ours, Record Store has managed to become arguably the best day of local music on the calendar.
All day long, many of Tampa Bay’s best artists will perform in stores like Mojo Books and Music, Microgroove, Bananas and Planet Retro, giving casual fans a taste of the great music that normally only gets played after dark. It’s like a bay-area-wide festival, with giveaways and special surprises for those who get up and out early.
This year, tbt* is getting in on the act. In conjunction with the good folks at Daddy Kool Records and No Clubs Productions, we’re staging our annual tbt* Ultimate Music Showcase at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Local 662 in St. Pete. Five of the artists spotlighted in this year’s Ultimate Local Music Guide, in tbt* today and all weekend (click here to find a copy) will take the stage: Good Graeff, Fowler’s Bluff, Sonic Graffiti, Archaic Interest and Mountain Holler. Read about them here; watch them live on Saturday. It’s just that easy.
From our perspective, the concert an awesome way to wrap up a day of shop- and venue-hopping, which we’ll be doing all morning, afternoon and evening. You can follow our RSD adventures on Twitter at @tbtsoundcheck ... or, if you like, pick up a hard copy of tbt*, scan select pages using the Layar app on your smartphone, and our tweets will pop right up, along with music, bonus photos, videos, quizzes and more.
There is much to love about this year's Ultimate Local Music Guide (you really do need to pick up a hard copy for the full interactive experience), but here are just a few highlights:
And as always, let's salute this year's top 10 Ultimate Local Artists, one by one:
Countless thanks to the team that made this all happen. Read about them all here.
