A very brief excerpt from the Hofstra professor's new(ish) book published by the University Press of Florida: Society creates an unnatural landscape of luxury homes and shopping malls without the messy intrusion of wild animals or natural disasters, so when nature does invade, it returns us to the instinctive fears deeply rooted in our minds. Just as we have created Bigfoot and the Chupacabra as fanciful expressions of our fear of nature, so too we have developed an unnatural fear of sinkholes.
