Former chief Judge Hawkes of Appeals Court admits he was asked to resign

First District Court of Appeal Judge Paul M. Hawkes went on a Tallahassee radio morning show to “dispel” erroneous reports about the opulent new courthouse he’s helped build.

Asked if he was forced to step down as chief judge, Hawkes did not answer. Asked again, he said his is not a job with a boss, nobody could force him to give up his leadership position.

He called back later, off air, and told the producer that he wanted to clarify what he said, actually Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles T. Canady had asked for his resignation as chief.

Photo gallery: Tampa Bay's Susan G. Komen 3-day Walk

A local park was a sea of pink at sunrise Friday morning as 1,600 walkers gathered for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure 60-mile fundraising walk to benefit breast cancer research. The walkers left Sand Key Park in Clearwater early Friday morning. Participants walk 20 miles a day and camp overnight. Part of the proceeds from the fundraiser go toward research and local community programs supporting education, screening and treatment.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  View photos from the walk. ... Times staffers Dan DeWitt and Daniel Wallace were in Haiti in September, eight months after the earthquake that killed an estimated 230,000 people in and near Port-au-Prince. They reported on the recovery work of Partners in Health — co-founded by Dr. Paul Farmer, a Hernando High graduate — and to see how the organization and country had fared since their last visit.

Take interactive tour of Glazer Children's Museum in Tampa

The museum is located along Ashley Drive in downtown Tampa's newly refurbished Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Saturday is opening day for families.

Potluck sentence: Tampa judge orders feuding neighbors to break bread

a4s_huey072410.jpgTwo men live at the end of Caron Road in Tampa in homes divided by a narrow fence. They have been at odds for almost 10 years. One man plays his music too loud. The other man calls the police.

This is how it was until January 22, when police caller had a few beers and shouted across the fence to music lover. Then came words and threats and fists. There was a trial and a guilty verdict. And then the sentencing fell to Judge Paul Huey, last week, in Courtroom 19.

Would he send the man to jail? Would he sentence him to probation? Or in the interest of a more cosmic justice would he do something he's never done before?  ... Read more
