Discussion open again on St. Petersburg City Council chairwoman Leslie Curran

leslie_curran.jpgYesterday, published a breaking news story about St. Petersburg City Council chairwoman Leslie Curran being hospitalized after a bike accident. Curran, 54, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center and was being treated in the intensive care unit.

Later in the day, reporters updated the story with news that Curran was put into a chemically induced coma.

A number of readers wished her well; others some had questions for the Times about the details of the accident. But others weren't so kind, posting insensitive comments about Curran.

I posted a couple comments asking readers to remember Curran's condition and directing them to another story to discuss St. Petersburg's biking safety campaign. Still, more inappropriate comments were posted, and prompted us to close comments on the story shortly after 5:00 last night.

After several inquiries from readers this morning, we have opened the comments on the story as a moderated discussion. So, we invite you to post your comments. Keep in mind the comments won't post immediately. But inappropriate comments won't publish at all.

We welcome dialogue/criticism of public officials in's coverage. But in a story about a public official being seriously injured, disparaging comments are out of line.

*** An updated story is coming soon from For now, here is the accident report from the St. Petersburg Police Department.
