Mikephillips250 Floridian: The Showtime series This American Life recently won two Emmys for an episode on Tampa's Michael Phillips, an amazing 27-year-old with a muscle disease that has eliminated his ability to move. Breathing through a respirator and outfitted with a computer that can turn text into spoken words, Phillips uses his thumb to communicate with the world. Here is Eric Deggans' profile on Phillips that ran May 1.

This spring, Nielsen Media Research, the largest taxpayer in Oldsmar, announced that it would lay off several hundred employees. This was shocking to the employees, many of whom had worked for the TV ratings giant for decades, but a somewhat typical event in a climate of economic uncertainty became much more when it was revealed that many of the jobs were being taken by Indian contract workers. Not in India, but in Oldsmar. It was outsourcing with a twist, a twist that is considered the latest trend in the development of the global economy.
