On Monday, prosecutors released 594 pages of investigative documents (gallery) in the first-degree murder case against Julie Schenecker, the mother accused in the Jan. 27 deaths of her two teenagers, Calyx, 16 and Beau, 13. They were shot to death on a Thursday after school — Beau in the family van, Calyx as she sat at a computer. Tampa police officers discovered the scene the following morning, after the children's out-of-state grandmother contacted authorities with concerns about an e-mail the 50-year-old mother sent in which she seemed depressed. Parker Schenecker, the former husband of Julie Schenecker and father of the two slain teens, told People magazine in April that he had long known about his wife's depression.

On the morning her husband, Deputy John Mecklenburg, was killed pursuing a felon, Penny Mecklenburg was told he was a hero. "That," she said, "was the beginning of my nightmare." Now she and their two children struggle to move on.
