A pioneer in Florida law
Williams went to law school in New York at a time when Florida universities did not admit blacks. One of the first black lawyers to practice in St. Petersburg, former NAACP president Ike Williams pressured the city and school system to integrate their staffs. After being rejected for membership four years earlier, in 1969 Williams became the first black member of the St. Petersburg Bar Association. See historical photos.

USF’s PaperFree Tampa Bay project is trying to get area doctors to use electronic prescriptions. Meanwhile, medical care charts are moving from filing cabinets to computers. The transition will be slow for many reason, but the movement would make information more readily available.
