NFL player's coach recalls Corey Smith's early days
A coach from former Buccaneer Corey Smith's early days writes on It's Your Times about his experiences with Smith as a youth. Smith is one of three boaters missing since a Saturday boating trip in the Gulf of Mexico. A fourth boater, Nick Schuyler was rescued Monday.
Dayton Leadbetter said Corey joined youth football at age 11, while most others had been playing since 6.
"It was embarrassing to Corey that he didn't even know the names of the positions, and we had to take him aside to teach him. We immediately noticed how quickly he learned because the next day he knew all the position names," he wrote.
In his second year of playing youth football, Corey was riding in Leadbetter's. "He stated 'I am going to play in the NFL someday. Do you agree?'" Leadbetter writes. "My answer: YES."
