In September, 2012, at 63 years old, Tom McCarthy finished hiking the Appalachian Trail. Between two hiking seasons, the retired Pasco businessman found time by hiking the trail's 2,164 miles in stints, sometimes coming home to visit family . He remembers it as a trying but beautiful retreat from society where all hikers are equal, regardless of their status off the trail. See photos.
