Photo of Skyway horror sparks reader discussion
Dan Aberg, an IT expert for a Sarasota-based company, was driving over the Sunshine Skyway when he saw a car burning beside the road. He snapped this photo with his phone and drove on.
Moments later, firefighters found a charred body in the car's trunk as a man's body was pulled from the water below.
The photo was posted here and on TampaBay.com's homepage throughout the morning and afternoon, sparking discussion among readers.
Several have questioned how Aberg could have taken the photo and kept driving. As reporter Brant James noted in his story, Aberg didn't realize what had occurred -- or was about to happen -- until he heard news reports later.
"It didn't occur to me in the slightest that something like this could be going on," Aberg told the St. Petersburg Times. "Stuff happens up there all the time. I figured somebody's luggage or tire was on fire."
Several readers came to Aberg's defense. "I'd be scared to pull over on the Sunshine Skyway for any reason. Get real people!" wrote a St. Petersburg resident.
"It's a grim photo, but it depicts life at a desperate point," wrote Ernie from Indian Rocks Beach. "A body is burning in the car's trunk and a man is about to commit suicide by jumping off the bridge. May God have mercy on the these two people. Thank you Mr.Aberg. It's a good photo."
Teresa from St. Petersburg wrote: "This picture is just a moment in time, a chance glimpse into what we now know to be a murder/suicide."
