Thursday's 'Doonesbury' comic strip
This week the Doonesbury comic strip by Garry Trudeau has been a provocative commentary on a Texas law requiring invasive sonograms for women contemplating abortions. Of the 40 sentences in the weeklong strip, one contains language that fails to meet Times’ standards for taste and appropriateness. Because Universal, the syndicate that distributes Doonesbury, does not allow us to delete or edit any wording -- in the same way we may choose to edit our own writers and other syndicated columnists -- we made the decision not to publish the March 15 installment in print.
For our readers who choose to view this installment and weigh in on Doonesbury, we begin the conversation by offering it here online. The Texas storyline resumes with the March 16 installment in print on the Times comic pages. -- The Editors
