With all the talk about Gov. Crist showing support for offshore drilling, Times reporter Ben Montgomery traveled to Galveston, Texas, for a look at its beaches, which opened its shores to drilling 40 years ago.

More than 100 readers have chimed in, some critical of Crist, others questioning the reporting in the story:

Sharon: "Tourism has always and will always be the primary source of income for Florida. And any amount of oil spill will affect that. Charlie Crist is just currying favor with the pols in Washington. He changes his mind with whatever looks good for him."

Ben: I can not believe this article was published. Galveston's water has nothing to do with the environment. It has to do with it being a right off the MS River. Next time do a little more research and maybe even talk to someone with a degree."

Richard Martin: "Texas is willing to pursue offshore oil drilling because they have nothing to lose. Their beaches are already ruined. I guess misery really does love company. If it's alright with Texas, I'd prefer to keep Florida's beaches protected and clean!"

One reader asking that we post all comments wrote: "This story may be one of the most important this state will ever face." We can't post all of them at once -- 35 of the most recent comments appear on stories -- but you can continue the conversation on It's Your Times.
