Will Tampa Bay Rays move across the Bay?
Talk turned to Tampa this week as the committee studying whether the Rays should leave Tropicana Field outlined three new options: Downtown Tampa, the West Shore district and the fairgrounds in eastern Hillsborough County.
Today's story is one of the most viewed on tampabay.com and nearly 200 comments have been posted on the story so far. Readers are submitting their preferred sites and criticizing other options. And they've got a few things to say to about the commute.
"Crossing the bridge is not a problem for this Tampan. It's the seemingly FOREVER drive once you get on the other side. And why does it have to be So difficult just to get back on the daggum interstate when leaving a game?" asks Carroll from Carrollwood.
Let 'Em Leave from St. Pete wrote: "Face history/reality. The Trop was the home of the Lightning . . . for a while. It was the home of the Storm . . . for a while. The fact is this location and the market available to use it easily cannot support a pro team, apparently of any sport."
"The location is good for Hillsborough and Pinellas. A 30-minute to 1-hour drive is not bad. Pinellas fans do it for the Bucs. Tampans need to man up and do it for the Rays," wrote Lynn from Seminole.
"Is everyone insane?" asks SAT from St. Pete. "In a dream world, of course we could build new stadiums (and new schools and new hospitals) any time we want. But we live in the real world. The Trop is not optimum, but it is servicable for now. Deal with this in ten years.
"Do they serve cheese with all the whine in Tampa?" quipped Ron from Clearwater. "Just get in your damn car and drive 20 minutes across the bay to support YOUR major league team just like us Pinellas residents support the Bucs and Lightning and knock off the parochialism B-S!"
