Your photos: Alligators spotted in Florida wilderness
Thanks to tampabay.com readers for sharing some cool gator photos with us.
Andrea Walker of South Tampa was in Naples for business last week and headed to the Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park looking for gators to photograph. "As I parked, I noticed a large gray object out my car window and to my surprise it was a 12-foot bull gator which appeared to be sunning itself. I got my camera and slowly got out of my car," she wrote. "Boy, was I scared."
Scared or not, Walker got some great photographs. Take a look:
"With adrenalin pumping, I crept closer hiding behind a palm tree located between me and the gator. I was about four feet from my car and about six feet from the gator as I took these shots."
"The gator opened his mouth and I could see into his large jaws. I took one step out from behind the tree, he stood up, and I ran back to my car. Then he slithered back into the canal."
Bad hair day? Joe Leone snapped this photo at Sawgrass Lake Park in St. Petersburg.
Dragonfly barrette: Tess Vasicek took this gator photo at Sawgrass Lake Park in St. Petersburg. "There were quite a few alligators out and about on my last visit, and this one had a dragonfly following it around and landing on its head every time it surfaced," she wrote.
Full belly: Catharine M. Cain captured this gator photo at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. She said she went to the preserve after traveling to the Space Coast to welcome Shuttle Discovery home on April 19.
"When it was postponed for a day, we spent the afternoon at Merritt Island captured some breath-taking moments with a variety of inhabitants of the preserve including this monster gator who had apparently just consumed a belly full."
Richard Raulerson shared this is a picture of " King George," an alligator that was reluctant to give up his spot on the banks of Lower Myakka Lake on April 19. Nicole Angus, a visitor from Ottawa, took the picture right as "we were dislodging him."
Jessica Karcher spotted this alligator at John Chesnut Park in the East Lake area of Palm Harbor.
