2 face absentee ballot fraud charges in Lake City
As the Legislature debated a major elections bill Tuesday, state authorities announced the arrests of two people on charges of absentee ballot voter fraud in a city election in Lake City in 2010.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and FBI agents announced that Betty Jefferson, 64, and Linda Ivery, 56, both of Lake City, had surrendered to law enforcement officials. Jefferson faces 24 felony and two misdemeanor charges and Ivery faces six felony charges and two misdemeanors.
The fraud allegations stem from the election of Jefferson's husband, Eugene, to a city council seat in 2010. FDLE said Betty Jefferson asked voters to sign absentee ballots that were already completed, fraudulently obtained absentees and tried to deceive voters into signing absentee ballots.
