Alex Sink, Newest Democratic Star

Alex Sink emerged Tuesday as the newest star in the Florida Democratic Party.

The chief financial officer-elect not only broke the Republican monopoly on the Cabinet. She ran well ahead of Jim Davis in many important places, which is not easy to do in a down-ballot race. She also beat Republican Tom Lee in a string of conservative rural counties across the state's northern tier -- places that usually vote Republican in statewide elections.

Sink got 6,000 more votes than Davis in Miami-Dade, 7,000 more in Broward and 13,000 more in Palm Beach. (Of course, another way to view the numbers is that these are Democrats who chose Charlie Crist for governor over Davis). Sink outpolled Davis by 25,000 votes in Pinellas and 10,000 votes in Hillsborough. (It's worth pondering: What would have happened if Sink ran against Crist?)

Sink also captured these counties: Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Jackson, Levy, Liberty, Madison, Putnam, Suwannee and Taylor.
