Fuchs on tax proposals

"...The old adage says that if you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is to stop digging. But some of the property tax proposals being floated around the Legislature just aim to move problems from one side of the hole to another....The most sensible and politically viable option of those presented thus far is to ask the voters to approve two of the Governor’s measures. One would raise the homestead exemption to $50,000, thus providing immediate relief to many lower and middle-income homeowners. This, coincidently, is about the same dollar level to which the current exemption would have risen when adjusted for inflation. The second would apply the “Save Our Homes” cap to all property, including rentals and businesses..."
