Rep Rivera: "Jeb Bush College of Education"
Controversy over the UF faculty's recent snub of former Gov. Jeb Bush seemed to have died down, but Rep. David Rivera revived the issue Tuesday with a proposal to name the university's college of education after Bush.
Rivera said his proposal, which passed the House Schools and Learning Council, was sparked by the UF Faculty Senate's rejection last month of a proposal to give Bush an honorary degree.
Honorary degrees are a common gesture between universities and public officials, artists and the like. But some faculty said their vote reflected dissatisfaction with some of Bush's policies on higher education. UF president Bernie Machen was surprised and called the move a "mistake."
UF Alumni leaders tried to soothe any wounds by naming Bush an honorary alumnus within days of the degree snub. But Rivera said his proposal goes even further, honoring the goverrnor who made education a focus of his tenure.
Rivera also wants to name the president's house at FIU after former President Ronald Reagan.
No word yet on whether the Bush and Reagan amendments will make it into a Senate companion bill for the naming of university buildings. Rivera also wants
