Righting a wrong

A House bill has already been filed to compensate Alan Crotzer for the 24 years he spent in prison on a wrongful conviction. Now the Senate has companion legislation.

"You cannot put a price tag on freedom, but we also cannot turn a blind eye to
injustice," said Sen.Dave Aronberg, D-Greenacres, who is sponsoring the bill. The legislation would designate $1.25 million - approximately $140 for
each day Crotzer sat behind bars – as compensation for the wrongful
imprisonment.

Aronberg sponsored the same bill last session, but it died. The House bill is sponsored by Rep. Luis Garcia, D-Miami Beach. Crotzer, formerly of St. Petersburg, was convicted of double rape in Hillsborough County. His innocence was proven through DNA evidence.
