Rubio fixes $23-million property tax mistake

House Speaker Marco Rubio and Senate President Ken Pruitt sent a letter to city of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz saying they intend to fix a provision of the property tax legislation that spared the city from making $23-million in cuts.

Miami had fallen incorrectly into a category of "municipality of special financial concern." Miami had problems in the past but not in recent years. But the mistake meant Miami did not have to cut 9 percent after a rollback. The St. Petersburg Times reported the problem in July.

"We are providing this notice so that you can take advance action to provide Miami taxpayers greater tax relief this year and to avoid making significant budget adjustments after your fiscal year has begun," the lawmakers wrote. The glitch will be fixed during the special session.

The City Commission can still make a supermajority vote to break the cap, just like any other local government can (and many have). The city's final budget hearing is next Thursday.
