DNC to Florida (again): Drop dead
National Democrats today released their hotel assignments for the Democratic National Convention in Denver. And which rooms did Democrats from all-important Florida get? The Ritz? The Four Seasons? Not quite.
Florida Democrats have been assigned no rooms. Zip. Nada. Nil. As in, try a youth hostel, Florida. With all of Florida's convention delegates stripped away for violating the primary schedule, the DNCC saw no need to find space for Sunshine staters. (full story here.)
"I am confident that our most important guests at the 2008 Demiocratic convention - our delegates - will be pleased with their accommodations and enjoy their stay in the Mile High City,'' said a statement from Leah Daughtry, CEO of the Democratic National Convention Committee.
Florida Democratic spokesman Mark Bubriski: "As Convention Chair Nancy Pelosi and DNC Chairman Howard Dean have said, the Presidential nominee ultimately determines who attends the Convention. We are confident that the nominee will reinstate our delegation and that there will be more than adequate housing for Florida delegates and guests among the 17,000 Convention hotel rooms in Denver... and maybe even one for Adam Smith at the Super 8 in Cheyenne."
For now, the continued wrangling is the source of much amusement for Republicans. They also face sanctions for the early primary but don’t seem to care much .
Unlike top Democrats, who have signed a pledge not to campaign in Florida, Republicans are tripping all over themselves to grab a piece of the state’s huge media markets.
“The DNC continues to punish Florida at its own peril,” said state. Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, who helped lead the effort to move up the primary and play a bigger role in
the election process. “I welcome their continued missteps,” Rivera added. “It can only help the Republican presidential candidate come next November. ”
