League of Women Voters opposes tax proposal

The League of Women Voters of Florida says the proposed property tax cut plan exacerbates inequities and will lead to less services for the public and infrastructure improvements. (news release here.)

"Save Our Homes is not based on ability to pay and has introduced a bias against more recent home buyers and non-homestead property owners resulting in large inequities in the taxes they pay," president Dianne Wheatley-Giliotti said.

The opposition is bad news for Gov. Charlie Crist, who is leading the campaign to pass the amendment, which would double the homestead exemption, allow for Save Our Homes portability and cap non-homestead assessments at 10 percent annually. This week, the Florida Education Association is expected to send its
members a letter against the plan because it would take up to
$3-billion from schools over five years.
