Early, absentee votes top 1-million

More than 1-million votes will have been tallied at early voting sites and by mail by the time polls in Florida open at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Through Saturday, the Division of Elections reports, about 503,000 Republicans, 437,000 Democrats and 109,000 unaffiliated or minor party voters had cast ballots. With this kind of turnout, imagine what would have happened if the Democratic presidential candidates had paid any attention to Florida.

Elections offices reported a brisk business Monday among absentee returns, ensuring that the pre-Election Day vote would exceed the 1-million mark, or 10-percent of the total electorate. "People were lining up to turn them in," said Kathy Adams, a spokeswoman for Palm Beach County's election office.
