Crist has surgery, puts Kottkamp in charge

Kottkamp_2 Gov. Charlie Crist is not vacationing this week, as he had planned. He was out of commission for two hours Wednesday undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. For two hours while Crist was under anesthesia, Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp became acting governor (read Crist's proclamation here).

The surgery on his left knee removed "tears in both his medial and lateral meniscus," according to the governor's press office. Dr. William Lowry performed the surgery at Colombia Center for Special Surgery in St. Petersburg, and expects a quick recovery.

Crist's spokeswoman, Erin Isaac, said the operation was not planned. She said Crist began experiencing pain in the knee yesterday and a doctor recommended surgery right away. "The doctor told us he anticipates a very expeditious recovery," Isaac said, but she was not more specific. Crist flew on a commercial flight on Tuesday evening from Tallahassee to Tampa and had the surgery Wednesday. "The governor's fine. He's in good spirits," Isaac said. She said it was doubtful Crist would spend a leisurely weekend vacation near Fort Myers as he'd planned.
