'Democratic warrior' Rich to lead minority party in Senate

Img00010 Senate Democrats on Wednesday tapped Sen. Nan Rich of Weston to be the next Senate Democratic Leader.

Rich, a staunch advocate for children and seniors, will take over the two-year post from Sen. Al Lawson, D-Tallahassee, in 2010.

Sen. Frederica Wilson, of Miami, nominated Rich, calling her a "textbook example of what a leader ought to be" and "a true Democratic warrior."

While two women have held the Senate President post - one a Democrat and one a Republican - Rich is the first woman to serve as Senate Democratic Leader.

"Sen. Lawson, I want you to remember that behind every successful man, there is always a woman just waiting for his job," Wilson joked.
