Supreme Court pick likely Perry
Gov. Charlie Crist should announce his pick for the Florida Supreme Court on Wednesday, and the choice is likely to be Circuit Judge James Perry of Sanford, well-placed sources say.
Perry, the first black judge in Central Florida’s 18th Circuit, was the pick of civil rights leaders, who admired his rise out of the Jim Crow South (story here), as well as some trial lawyers.
But social conservatives, the NRA and industry attorneys opposed the pick, favoring appeals judge Alan Lawson, who advocated for the "proper, limited role of the judicial branch" in his application for the post.
The position that must be filled from the state's 5th Appellate District, which includes Orlando, Daytona Beach and Melbourne. It's the fourth pick for Crist.
The pick replaces Charles Wells, who had to leave this month after he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70.
