House poised to gut controversial election bill

The House on Friday is expected to debate its version of an election-code rewrite, and Majority Leader Adam Hasner says the bill will be rewritten to remove its most controversial provisions.

"Almost all of the provisions that had any controversy are going to be removed from the bill on the floor of the House," Hasner said. "I think everyone needs to stay patient, be calm. There's only a few days left in session. Tensions are high."

The bill is HB 7149, and Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, has filed a strike-all (bar code 069089) that eliminates all language related to third-party voter registration, fines, provisional ballots and a new floating 100-foot boundary at polling places. The Lopez-Cantera amendment does revive the controversial leadership funds and requires initiative-petition forms to be turned in within 45 days of being signed. The House move followed a mobilization of voter advocacy groups in opposition to the original bill and a thinly-veiled threat of a veto by Gov. Charlie Crist.
