C.W. Bill Young rakes in defense cash
Defense contractors that U.S. Rep. Bill Young is seeking earmarks for this year gave him more than $123,000 in past two years, according to a new study from Taxpayers for Common Sense that comes as 2010 defense spending is being finalized.
The long-serving Pinellas County Republican took in the third most money among members of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, behind Rep. Jim Moran, D-VA, ($201,100) and Rep. Jack Murtha, D-PA, ($199,050).
"It's really hard to prove a quid pro quo but these companies aren't dumb. They are making contributions to lawmakers who are in a good position to deliver millions of taxpayer dollars," said Steve Ellis of Taxpayers for Common Sense.
But Young, who is the ranking Republican on the committee, said in an interview yesterday about the troubled contractor Conax that contributions do not hold sway over his decisions.
