An update on the Jim Greer drama
There's not a lot of rock solid information to be had about the status of embattled Florida GOP Chairman Jim Greer, and loads and loads of chatter of varying reliability. Here's our best sense of the landscape:
What had sounded late Friday and early Saturday like a looming exit for Greer, no longer sounds so imminent. There have been conversations between the governor's office and legislative leaders and breaking of bread between Jim and Lisa Greer and harlie and Carole Crist. The uncomfirmed Buzz is that Sen. George LeMieux and Gov. Crist are the main ones urging Greer to stay on and that Crist has assured legislative leaders he will help raise money for whatever shortfall may exist in the party accounts.
Look for a bunch of additional Republican elder statesmen, including former state Sens. Dan Webster and Curt Kiser, to publicly call for Greer to step down soon.
Meanwhile, there has been a flurry of e-mails flying among state committee members insisting that despite the talk among Greer critics, the state party budget is in fine shape. As the Sentinel reported, Dixie County GOP Chairman John Friskey has filed a grievance against state party vice chairman for allegedly distributing confidential information to The Buzz. Hard to see that going anywhere, considering that Cox ally Tony DiMatteo of Pinellas is chairman of the grievance committee.
The threats against Greer critics appear to be having little affect, as Hillsborough Republican Chairwoman Deborah Cox-Roush said in an e-mail to her executive committee: "We have been threatened to be removed, members have been encouraged to file grievances against us and even threatened that lawsuits could be forthcoming for taking this stand and have been told that we are trying to "Take down the Republican Party." This could be no more further from the truth. Our belief in the party, its principles, values and the desire for Victory statewide in 2010 has caused me and these state executive committee members to take this action. As your chairman, I will not back down, nor will I be threatened - I will continue to stand for our common values and our vision for Florida and America. You have elected me as the Chairman of the Hillsborough County Republican Party and I hope I can count on your support in this matter."
