Dan Gelber's basketball buddy, Senator-elect Scott Brown
The new hero of Republicans nationwide, Massachusetts Senator-elect Scott Brown, has an old friend in Florida: State Sen. Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach. They went to Tufts University together, and Gelber says that while he hasn't talked to him in a couple of years, they were friendly and played some league basketball together.
"He was Downtown Scotty Brown then, not Scott Brown. We just called him Downtown,'' said Gelber, who recalls no political discussions at the time. "He was a nice guy, very social and a very good basketball player. ... The 15- or 16-foot shot from the baseline was his bread and butter."
When Brown posed for Cosmo's beefcake spread, Tufts alumnae were aghast. "The Cosmo thing was jaw-dropping."
