Bill Young, Kathy Castor call for Obama to spare Florida from offshore drilling expansion
With an oil spill creeping toward Florida's beaches, U.S. Reps. C.W. Bill Young and Kathy Castor have joined forces in calling for President Barack Obama to back off of a plan to open up more of the eastern Gulf of Mexico to offshore drilling.
Castor, a Democrat, said she and Young, a Republican, are asking Obama to instead stick with a 2006 bipartisan compromise that keeps the rigs 235 miles away from the Tampa Bay region.
She also said they are asking other members of the Florida delegation to sign the letter because "it's very important we have a united front." They are also requesting face-to-face meetings with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and White House energy adviser Carol Browner, a Miami native and former state environmental regulator.
