Alex Sink named to list of top candidates by national Democrats
Congressonal candidate Alex Sink has been listed in what the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee calls its "Jump Start" program, which it describes as its "signature program for top-tier candidates."
The 20 candidates who have been selected qualify for additional financial and opperational support from the DCCC, the group said Monday in a news release.
It's another sign the national Democratic Party is favoring Sink over the candidate who has spent more time in the race, Jessica Ehrlich. Ehrlich also ran last year in the district against then-incumbent Republican Rep. C.W. Bill Young. Young died Oct. 18, and special elections have been scheduled to pick his successor. The primary will be Jan. 14 and the general election will be March 11.
Sink has announced she would move from Hillsborough County to run in the seat, which is entirely within Pinellas. She has stressed her banking business experience and her tenure as Florida chief financial officer, and said she worked on Pinellas County issues in both capacities.
But Ehrlich, a St. Petersburg attorney with experience working as a congressional aide, said she is passionate about fighting for her home county, and is firmly committed to running a vigorous campaign..
