Andrew Gillum courts Bernie Sanders wing of Democratic party

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum will be the keynote speaker at the annual conference of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida later this month. The group, which last year endorsed Bernie Sanders for president and all but endorsed* Alan Grayson for U.S. Senate, said it is "inspired by (Tallahassee) Mayor Gillum's leadership on gun safety, education, criminal justice reform, immigration, marriage equality, and making Florida's economy work for everyone."

In a crowded field of Democratic candidates being seen as the most passionate advocate for working class Floridians could be a signicant help for Gillum, who is also widely expected to earn the support of the influential Service Employees International Union.

"Gillum was a charter member when our caucus was founded in 2011, and he participated in our Building the Democratic Bench panel during Leadership Blue last year," said DPCF President Susan Smith of Tampa. "We are excited to have the opportunity to introduce Andrew to our new members as he begins his run for governor.”

March 18-19 conference at the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association in Tampa will include panels, media and legislative training. Tickets will be available on Eventbrite.

*DPCF Susan Smith noted that her group never formally endorsed Grayson, who also served as a keynote speaker at one of its gatherings. Its members clearly liked the liberal firebrand. From a 2015 release: According to our members and supporters, Alan Grayson of Florida’s 9th Congressional District is the clear choice to run for U.S. Senate in 2016. Grayson received more than 63% of the vote.
