Beruff takes aim at Rubio on immigration reform

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Carlos Beruff is out to make sure Republican voters do not forget U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio's support for an immigration reform bill that became an anchor on Rubio's failed campaign for the White House.

Beruff released a statement on Tuesday trying to align Rubio with President Barack Obama and the "Washington establishment" on immigration reform. It all ties back to the 2013 immigration reform legislation Rubio initially backed (but later said he could not support) that included 13-year pathway for people in the nation illegally to gain legal status and eventually citizenship. Critics - including his opponents for the GOP nomination earlier this year - have called that amnesty, but Rubio had argued that it was not a "blanket amnesty" that he has previously said he was opposed to.

Beruff's take is clear.

"When faced with increasing threats to Americans, what did Marco Rubio do? Rather than work to secure the border, he supported Obama’s amnesty plan for illegal immigrants, endearing him to the Washington establishment in his bid for president," Beruff said in a statement to the media. "It’s clear that ISIS and others intent on doing us harm will use any means necessary, including our Southern border, to enter this country. And now, Senator Rubio won’t support Donald Trump, who is committed to closing the border and restricting travel to America from countries with terrorist connections."
