Bill Nelson: John Glenn had the 'right stuff'

 Sen. Bill Nelson:

“John Glenn is the last of the original seven American astronauts who truly had the ‘right stuff.’ On top of paving the way for the rest of us, he was also a first-class gentleman and an unabashed patriot. He leaves his wife Annie, who always stood by him as he ventured into the unknown cosmos.”

Nelson in 1986 spent six days orbiting the Earth aboard the space shuttle Columbia.

Sen. Marco Rubio: “As the first American to orbit Earth in 1962, John Glenn was a true pioneer and American hero who led the way with the Mercury Seven astronauts in launching a new era of American space exploration. He was also a devoted patriot, military veteran and statesman, and we are extremely grateful for this service to our country. He may have hailed from Ohio, but Florida will always be proud of this legend’s role in our space program and his history-making launch from Cape Canaveral."

Rep. Alcee Hastings: "It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of former Senator John Glenn. Senator Glenn was an American hero: ‘the last true national hero America has ever made,’ in the words of author Tom Wolfe. He served with distinction throughout his entire life, as a decorated veteran of WWII, a pilot, one of the original ‘Mercury Seven’ astronauts, and as a United States Senator. A brave and devoted patriot, Senator Glenn represented the very best of America. I was proud to co-sponsor legislation awarding Senator Glenn with a Congressional Gold Medal in 2009, an award befitting his exemplary service to our nation."
