Bill Nelson lines up behind compromise gun bill
Sen. Bill Nelson today put his support behind a compromise gun bill, saying, “I owe it to the people of Orlando to try to get something done."
But the legislation from Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, faces long odds with the NRA coming out against it this afternoon. Sen. Marco Rubio is reviewing the amendment but has consistently sided with the NRA.
The bill gives the Attorney General authority to deny firearms sales to individuals who appear on the No Fly List or the Selectee List. It includes a “look-back” provision that ensures prompt notification to the FBI if a person who has been on the broader Terrorism Screening Database within the past five years purchases a firearm. But it also includes an appeals process designed to give due process.
