Bondi and Scott should back away from Trump, Gelber says
Former Democratic state legislator Dan Gelber says Pam Bondi and Rick Scott should renounce their support for Donald Trump. He blogs:
"It's time for Florida Governor Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi to recant their endorsements of Donald Trump. I appreciate that it can be difficult to rebuke a member of their own party, especially when Trump so dominated the Florida primary. But it's hard to reconcile any public official of either party - especially those elected statewide — supporting Trump after the last few weeks and days.
"These last two weeks have given plenty of reasons to reconsider their endorsements of Trump. It's not just the arrest of his campaign manager for battery on a female reporter, or his sophomoric attacks on his opponent's wife. Or the comments that he is willing to punish women for abortions. Or even his dangerous miscues about the use of nuclear weapons.
"Any one of these comments should cause an uncomfortable pause about a presidential candidate - but collectively they are making it abundantly clear that Trump is unfit to serve and unworthy of the office he seeks. Most alarming is his obvious misogyny. Any parent of daughters should be ashamed of how Trump has comported himself. Any advocate for women's safety and health should be, likewise, deeply disturbed.
"And it is no defense to claim an endorsement of Trump is not a validation of everything he says or does. This is no longer about policy positions or a single aberrant act. It is about who Trump is - a sexist and a bigot who is categorically unqualified to be President.
"Even before these latest revelations, other elected Republican officials in Florida already indicated they will not support Trump - Scott and Bondi should as well."
