Capitol Buzz: Things to watch today in Tallahassee
Legislators have no meetings scheduled Friday as they await details from budget writers for conference committees that will begin negotiations this weekend. Meanwhile, the president will arrive in Jacksonville. Here are two things to watch Friday:
* President Barack Obama will travel to Jacksonville's Saft America plant, a lithium-ion battery operation built with federal money from the economic stimulus package he pushed through Congress in 2009. The visit is part of the White House effort to highlight success stories from the Recovery Act as the president winds down his final year in office.
* The state's economists meet to determine the economic impact of House and Senate bills that propose removing the requirement that pari-mutuels run horse and dog races in return for operating card rooms and slot machines. The review is the second piece of the economic report needed by lawmakers to determine the cost of the proposals to revise the state's gambling laws.
