Carlos Beruff defends describing Barack Obama as an 'animal'
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Carlos Beruff took to the airwaves Thursday morning to defend his description of President Barack Obama as an "animal."
Beruff has been criticized by both Republican and Democrat rivals, accused of making racist comments for the following: "Unfortunately, for seven and a half years this animal we call president, because he's an animal, OK - seven and a half years, has surgically and with thought and very smart, intelligent manner, destroyed this country and dismantled the military under not one, not two, but three secretary of defenses."
Initially Beruff has said his statement was taken out of context.
Speaking on WFLA 970's morning show (after jokingly being introduced as a racist), Beruff said "there's no apology needed" for using strong language. "(Obama) has dismembered the military and I think it's a mistake."
Asked what he was thinking for selecting that word, Beruff said, "First of all, nothing goes through my mind. I start talking and I get very passionate about things and that's the word that came out."
Beruff said it's common in the Spanish language to call someone an animal for acting stupid. "It's totally common," he said, "and when my blood pressure goes up my Spanish stuff kicks in."
