Charlie Crist raises $500K

Charlie Frago reports:

Charlie Crist entered the race for the 13th Congressional District Democratic nomination in October needing to make up ground.

His opponent, Eric Lynn, a former Obama administration national security official had announced in the spring. He had used that time to raise more than $400,000.

On Monday, Crist send a message to supporters announcing a record-setting fundraising quarter of "more than a half-million dollars."

Historic with some qualifiers: First quarter for a non-incumbent, non-special election Democrat in Florida.

Lynn's campaign quickly sought to deflate the announcement by seizing on those caveats, pointing out that Crist had fallen far short of Alex Sink's initial cash haul in the 2014 special election after the death of longtime Congressman C.W. "Bill" Young.

"I think his supporters must be a little disappointed," said Bill Burton, a Lynn advisor.

Lynn's latest campaign filings won't be ready for a couple of days, Burton said. When they are released, they will show Lynn with more overall cash and cash-on-hand, he said.

Crist thanked his supporters for "proving the cynics wrong" with their financial support.

"This number is not about me. It's about you," he wrote."You are everything that's right about politics.
