2 DCA judges seek spot on federal bench
Judges James R. Wolf, appointed to the court in 1990 and Joseph Lewis Jr., appointed in 2001, are the latest in a string of judges at the embattled appellate court seeking other jobs.
Wolf was a member of the building committee that approved construction of the posh new 1st District Court of Appeal courthouse in Tallahassee that many Floridians have dubbed a “Taj Mahal.’’
The courthouse and other alleged transgressions led the Judicial Qualifications Commission to charge 1st District Court Judge Paul M. Hawkes with conduct unbecoming a judge last month. Hawkes contends that the courthouse was approved by all of his fellow judges and denies any wrongdoing. He is expected to stand trial later this year.
Wolf and Lewis are among 10 applicants for a post created by the retirement of Judge Stephan P. Mickle of Gainesville. Other applicants include Circuit Judges Mark E. Walker, Tallahassee and William E. Davis, Gainesville; U.S. Magistrates Gary R. Jones, Ocala and Monte C. Richardson, Jacksonville; U.S. Administrative Law Judge Douglas W. Abruzzo, Orlando and lawyers Martin B. Sipple, Tallahassee, Isabel “Cissy’’ Boza Skipper, Tampa and Brian Gilchrist, Orlando.
Skipper, Richardson and Gilchrist have also applied for a similar vacancy in Florida’s Middle District.
Members of the Federal Judicial Nominating Committee will begin interviewing applicants for three federal judicial vacancies in late July.
