Is the $500 contribution cap an endangered species?
For more than two decades, Florida has capped individual contributions to state and local candidates to $500 per election cycle (interpreted as $500 for the primary and another $500 in the general election).
But the incoming leaders of the state Legislature, Senate President Don Gaetz and House Speaker Will Weatherford, are talking seriously about raising the cap, subject to a condition: outlawing legislator-controlled funds known as CCEs, with no contribution limits, which have proliferated in recent years.
Weatherford calls the $500 contribution limit "archaic," and notes that it is now one of the lowest, if not the lowest, of any state in the country. If the legislative leaders follow through, they will have initiated a very important discussion about the need to clean up Florida's campaign system. Read Steve Bousquet's column here.
